The underlying model is a state transition diagram or table. The diagram or table
connects beginning states, events, and conditions with resulting states and actions.
In other words, some status quo prevailed and the system was in a current state. Then
some event occurs, some event that the system must handle. The handling of that event
might be influenced by one or more conditions. The event/condition combination
triggers a state transition, either from the current state to a new state or from the current
state back to the current state again. In the course of the transition, the system takes one
or more actions.
