Graham Thomas, Independent Consultant: Software Testing Secrets We Dare Not Tell

I firmly believe that “There are some fundamentals of software testing that we really don’t understand or know the answers to yet.”

Here are some simple questions. They are very easy to ask. Unfortunately they are very difficult, if not impossible to answer.

1.What is the purpose of Software Testing?

2.Just how effective is the way we test – and how do we know? (Trad, V-Model, Structured Testing, agile or any other form of testing for that matter?)

3.If checking isn't software testing, then why is it that ‘checking’ is what our stakeholders are paying us to do?

4.If software testing is so difficult, demanding and challenging, then why is it that we keep on assigning the least skilled or experienced to perform it?

5.Why do software testers spend so much of their time running tests that do not find bugs?

These questions are important because they drive at the very heart of what we are doing in the software testing industry today, and understanding the answers will surely prime the future direction that our industry will move in.

This session has been designed to be a highly interactive discussion which many people might find challenges their basic understandings. I will act as facilitator, give an introduction to each question, then actively moderate the debate and if needed take on the role of arbiter. Come along, expect to be involved, and if you have a view then please share it. Help to drive forward the discussion – and potentially the software testing industry.

The SIGiST Israel is a non for profit organization, established in 2001 by Alon Linetzki, who is now the vice president of the Israeli Testing Certification Board. The main idea of the SIGiST Israel is to serve as a platform for the Testing & QA Community in Israel to present ideas, challenges and possible good practices in testing and testing thinking. The conference is running annually, started in 2006, and experienced about 1,700 people so far joining and sharing testing and quality assurance knowledge. The conference is organized in a 2-3 days tutorials, followed by a 2 days track sessions. Usually there are 2-3 parallel tracks, and a Testing Expo day with exhibitors.

Finnish Software Testing Board FiSTB organizes second annual FiSTB Testing Assembly on Thursday 22.8.2013 at 9-17 in Helsinki Radisson Blu Royal. This 200 person testing event is aimed for Finnish Association of Software Testing members, certified ISTQB-testers and other people interested in testing and quality assurance. The event is collocated with ISTQB-meeting, so we expect to have also several international gurus as speakers! Everyone should mark the time in their calendars already now. The seminar registration will be opened later.

At this stage we open the call for speakers. The event has the theme of Bringing new ways of thinking into testing. Under the theme you can speak about e.g.

· agile testing

· test automation

· utilizing clould in testing

· game testing or utilizing gamification in testing

· change project in testing (any change)

· how can the testing of a company be organize innovatively

· multidiscipline approach to testing (bringing ideas from other fields to testing)

We hope especially case-presentations and interaction with the audience. However, you can propose your own format.

The event has a small budget, so we cannot pay the speakers, but we can offer a great audience!

On Tuesday the 5th February, we will present six half-day workshops taking place at our usual Forum venue, the Balls Brothers Conference Centre at Minster Pavement, Mincing Lane, London EC3R 7PP UK.

Alan Richardson, Compendium Developments	Lessons Learned with BDD - Thinking and Automating with Domain Specific Languages Starting with the the tools for BDD and Acceptance Testing has become increasingly simple. To learn tools like Cucumber and FitNesse to create tests you can now read books and articles and watch countless videos to help. But using the tools is only part of the battle. Over years of working with Agile teams, and using various tools to help Business Analysts collaborate with Development staff, writing high level tests in a human readable language, I've learned that most people do not realise that they are writing a Domain Specific Language. Each of the tools provides a different mechanism for modeling the domain and writing the language. But fundamentally we are creating a language unique to our domain. And if we do not recognise this, or harness this, then we make our life harder. So in this session I want to look at some of the BDD and Acceptance Testing tool mechanisms e.g. tables or Gherkin, with the additional modeling perspective of a high level language that models the domain. Business Analysts are trained in modeling domains. Testers are trained in identifying ambiguity. Developer are trained in refactoring to domain objects. These skills exist in the development team, we just have to harness them. In this session we will explore what this means, and how it changes our approach to writing BDD. This session does not require access to a computer. Tools will be demonstrated. But tests will be written on paper and discussed by the group to explore how to use BDD tools and and languages to more effectively model the domain.
Paul Gerrard, Principal, Gerrard Consulting	Redistributing Testing - Using Stories to Drive Software Development and Test it Too The pressures to change the way we develop and test software are forcing a rethink on how we: Acquire and validate requirements knowledge through collaboration, example and iteration. Use that knowledge to define software behaviour for developers To adopt the test-driven approach to development (aka BDD, TDD, ATDD Or Specification by Example). Relieve system testers of the late, tedious, error-prone And expensive checking activity (and inevitable rework) allowing them To focus on more effective exploratory testing and workflow-based testing. The testing 'times are a changing'. The 'redistribution of testing' reflects the testers' perspective. In this session, we'll look at how testers, business analysts and developers collaborate to make change happen and use real-world examples to practice on.
Dr. Emma Langman, Change Magician, Progression Partnership	Changing Life in a Heartbeat During this interactive and practical session, Dr Langman will share experiences of Testers and Analysts becoming Change Leaders in restarting their organisation's cardiac rhythm. Organisations nowadays are like unfit runners - with bursts of energy and long periods of breathlessness. And, from time to time, people leave when they just can't keep up the pace. Together we'll be exploring how Testers and Analysts can help their organisations move to a wider understanding of Agile, which can be just as useful in the Boardroom as at the IT Coalface. Expect to challenge your existing assumptions, share war stories and take away new ideas for action.
Susan Windsor, Principal, Gerrard Consulting	Supplier Selection and Management Whether your organisation uses packaged software suppliers, contract staff, bespoke solutions or suppliers of development and/or testing services, this workshop will help you identify the most appropriate way to both understand and manage the relationship. Working with one or more suppliers is becoming a common, if uncomfortable fact of life. Frequently companies do not have their own software development life-cycle under control and yet are now faced with managing suppliers in addition to their own activities. By the time most of us get involved with suppliers the decision on who to use has already been taken and the contract put into place. So, you may think that it’s too late to have any influence over how the relationship will be managed? This is definitely not the case! Anyone involved in working alongside one or more suppliers has a significant role to play in terms of the success of the on-going relationship. In all customer/supplier relationships there is one organisation that will take control of the relationship, and if it’s not you, it will definitely be your supplier! They already have preferred ways of working which may not suit your needs and the sooner you identify this and manage any required compromise, the more successful your relationship will be. If you want to increase the probability of taking delivery of supplied software on time and within budget, develop plans to manage suppliers, evaluate potential suppliers and apply techniques for tracking and controlling your suppliers then this workshop is for you.
