CMMI Appraisals Service
CMMI appraisals help you in prioritising the areas of improvement and facilitate the development of strategy for consolidating your process improvements on a sustainable basis. Hence CMMI appraisals are predominantly used either as part of a process improvement programme or for rating prospective suppliers.
Unless you measure your organisation's process strengths and weaknesses you will not know where to focus your process improvement efforts. By knowing the actual strengths and weaknesses it is easier to establish an effective and more focused action plan.
The SEI has developed a document to assist in identifying or developing appraisal methods that are compatible with the CMMI Product Suite. This document is the Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC). The ARC describes a full benchmarking class of appraisal as Class A. However other CMMI based appraisal methods might be more appropriate for a given set of needs, including self-assessments, initial appraisals, quick-look or mini-appraisals, incremental appraisals, and external appraisals. Of course this has always been true, but the ARC formalises these appraisals into three classes by mapping requirements to them, which provides a consistency and standardisation rarely seen in other appraisal methods. This is important because it recognises that an organisation can get benefits from internal appraisals with various levels of effort.
Thus, a particular appraisal method is declared an ARC Class A, B, or C appraisal method. This designation implies the sets of ARC requirements that the method developer has addressed when designing the method.
What are SCAMPI Appraisals?
SCAMPI stands for Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement.
SCAMPI is the official SEI method to provide a benchmarking appraisal whose objectives are to understand the implemented processes, identify process weaknesses (called findings), determine the level of satisfaction against the CMMI (gap analysis), reveal development/acquisition/service risks and (if requested) assign ratings. Ratings are the extent to which the corresponding practices are present in the planned and implemented processes of the organisation and are made based on the aggregate of evidence available to the appraisal team.
The underlying principles of SCAMPI appraisals are:
SCAMPI Appraisal Classes
SCAMPI Class-A Appraisals
The "Class-A" Appraisal is the gold-standard for evaluating process maturity and awarding a CMMI maturity or capability level rating to your organization. Class-A Appraisals are collaborative, planned events that are led by an SEI Authorized SCAMPI Lead Appraiser along with a trained appraisal team. We specializes in "verification-mode" appraisals - a method that reduces the complexity and effort of the onsite appraisal in order to keep time and costs to a more manageable level.
SCAMPI Class-B & Class-C Appraisals
SCAMPI "Class-B" and "Class-C" Appraisals are less formal, less costly, and less intensive than the Class-A. While they don't result in a Maturity or Capability Level rating, they are an excellent way to reduce risk and verify that your process is performing at a high level of performance. our Class-B and Class-C Appraisals include a detailed gap analysis and a blueprint for improving performance in preparation for your SCAMPI Class-A.
Other Appraisal Services:
Mini-Appraisal
A customized appraisal that provides a directional view into the maturity of an organization's processes. These are normally performed quarterly.

- Start with a reference model (usually CMMI for Acquisition, Development or Services),
- Use a defined appraisal process (SCAMPI),
- Involve senior management as sponsors,
- Observe non-attribution (findings are not attributable to individuals or (usually) projects),
- Approach the appraisal collaboratively,
- Focus on action.
- Preparation and planning,
- On-site activities; interviews, document reviews, preliminary observations, characterisation, findings and ratings, final reporting,
- Follow-on activities.
